Store Sheep.- About 12,500 were penned, nearly 10,000 being wether lambs. The best of the rape lambs were dearer by Is a head and other sorts were firm at last week’s rates. Best sorts made from 18s to 19s 2d. Two-tooth Chatham Islands owes sold at 30s and six-tooth and eight-tooth local at 21s 3d. Best wethers made 21s 6d. Fat Lambs.—l7oo were penned and sold at full export rates, butchers exceeding the schedule for heavy sorts I Best prices were 26s to 29s for tops. Fat Sheep.—s7oo were penned and there was a keen sale. Exporters bought ewes freely at up to 18s and 19s, and l.ght wethers to 275. All heavy sheep fully maintained last v eek’s rates and light wethers were Is dearer. Best wethers 32s 6d to 365. good 29s to 325, and inferior down ta 245; best ewes 23s to 265, good 20s to 22s 6d, light from 15s to 18s. Fat Cattle.—A very small penning of 368 and an advance in values of 20* a head for all except light sorts. Best beef made 37s to 40s per lOOlbs. Top prices were from £l6 10s to £IS 7s 6d, good medium weights £l4 to £IG ss, light steers down to £9 10s, best cows and heifers to £ll 17s 6d, good £9 to £lO 10s, light cows down to £5. Fat Pigs.—Porkers were slightly easier and baconers firmer. Porkers 33s 6d to 51s 6d; average price per lb. 6ct to 6kl. Baconers 55s 6d to £4 7s 6d, average price per lb. 52d to 6id. THE WESTFIELD SALE FIRM TONE IN BEEF MARKET [ Per Press Association. ] AUCKLAND, Feb. 2. Chilling operators were responsible for a firm tone in the beef market at Westfield to-day. The large entry sold freely, quality generally showing a fair improvement on recent offerings. Extra choice ox sold at 40s per 100 lb., choice and prime 32s to 395, unfinished 25s to 365, prime cow and heifer beef 30s to 375, unfinished 20s to 295; extra heavy prime steers £l4 to £l6, heavy £l3 to £l5 ss, medium £ll 10s to £l3 17s 6d. light £lO to £l2 ss, unfinished £6 to £lO 10s; extra heavy prime cows and heifers £9 to £lO 12s 6d, heavy £7 to £8 17s 6d, medium £6 to £7 17s fid, light £5 to £6 15s, unfinished £3 to £4. Although a heavy supply of sheep came forward, quality was patchy. Bidding . was particularly spirited, wethers showing an improvement in value up to 2s a head on the former sale. Ewes maintained late quotations Extra heavy wethers 30s to 325, heavy 29s to 30s 9d, medium 27s to 29s 3d, light 24s to 26; ftd, unfinished 18s to 23s 6d; extra heavy maiden ewes 22s to 245, heavy 20s to 21s 6d, medium 16s to 19s light 15s 9d to 16s 6<l. unfinished 3s to 15s 6d. Prime quality lambs were plentiful and were quitted at firm late rates. Best graces realised ,18s to 27s 6d, small and unfinished 7s 6d tol7s 6d. A full yarding of calves again met with a slack demand, only primest quality showing any advance on a declining market. Runners ranged from £2 to £B, heavy vealers £4 to £4 16s, medium £3 Is to £3 18s, light £2 7s to £3, smaller £1 12s to £2, small and unfinished £1 to £1 10s, rough 15s to 255. bobby 5s to 17s. Fewer pigs were sold at the new schedule rates. Baconers were inclined to improve but porkers were sl'ghtly cheaper. Stores realised firm values. Choppers £2 15s to £4 13s, heavy baconers £3 10s to £4 2s medium £3 4s to £3 14s, light £2 17s to £3 7s; heavy porkers £2 Ils to £2 16s. medium £2 5s to £2 9s, light £2 to £2 4s, small and unfinished £1 8s to £1 15s, large stores 21s to 275, slips 12s to 21s, weaners 7s to 15s. Baconers arr> porkers were quoted to 6d per lb.
