HAWERA HORSES

TUESDAY’S TRACK WORK. ONE WHETU IMPRESSIVE. Hawera candidates for New Plymouth were given their final gallops on Tuesday morning, a feature of the work being a good trial by the Taranaki Cup hope One Whetu, wrote the Taranaki Herald’s Hawera correspondent. Both the course proper and the plough were available, most ; of the work being on the latter track. On the plough Naughty Marietta started from the six furlongs post and was picked up at the five furlongs by Daisy Chain. Naughty Marietta, who is much improved, was four lengths clear at the finish in 1.18 3-5. She will be ridden by S. Edwards. Notium covered six furlongs in 1.18 3-5. He is in excellent order. Student Prince ran an easy six furlongs in 1.21. He should be' a useful prospect in the Taranaki Plate in which he will be ridden by C. Cole. One Whetu earned many friends for the Taranaki Cup when he was associated with Ned Cuttie over six furlongs in 1.15 2-s—a really good gallop. They finished together, but One Whetu was going the better. It was his best effort for some time and suggests that he is returning to form. L. Clifford will probably be his Cup rider. Trilitho shaded Narrator over five furlongs in 1.5. After pacing twice round Lowenberg ran home the last half-mile in 50 3-ssec. He has freshened up nicely since Trentham. Ruling Lady sprinted three furlongs smartly in 37Jsec. On the course proper Fafner obtained an early break over Golden Orchid, but the latter was on terms at the finish in 1.7. Golden Orchil looks an excellent prospect. It has not yet been decided in which race Fafner will start. L. Monkley will ride him. Prime Quality and Dark Eagle sprinted three furlongs in 38sec. They are both to race at Egmont. Royal Fire schooled ateractively over five hurdles, it being an excellent display.
