MECHANISED ARMY UNITS

■"THE parade of a mechanised army unit in Wanganui will provide the public with an opportunity of viewing modern military equipment. One of the lessons of the war in Spain has been that it is the side with the equipment which stands the. best chance of winning a battle. The same lesson has been enforced in China, where the overwhelming preponderance of manpower on the defence side has been of no avail against the mechanised invaders, whose numbers are small by comparison. New Zealand is a country with a very small population, and from the standpoint of military defence, is under a severe handicap. Indeed, it is probable that any serious attempt at invasion could not be successfully withstood. But any serious invasion of New Zealand would only occur during the course, of a world-wide war, in which case the fate of this Dominion would be decided by the result of the major contest.

What New Zealand could conceivably be called upon to face would be a wrecking invasion by a small, highly-equipped expeditionary force engaged in a hit-and-run campaign. For the purpose of frustrating such an adventure it is necessary for New Zealand to be equipped with machines which will permit of the defence frwe dealing on equal terms with such a 1: invasion.
