BIBLE CLASSES

PRESBYTERIAN CONFERENCE. I ANNUAL CAMP OPENED. j With approximately 550 delegates; from all parts of the Dominion attending the 32nd annual summer conference of the Presbyterian Bible Classes or New Zealand was opened yesterday evening with a public welcome at the Opera House. The camp activities will commence in earnest this morning. The delegates were welcomed by the Rev. A. C. McLean, of St. Paul’s, who extended them a welcome on behalf of the Presbyterian Churches of the city and the camp committee. He believed that not only wuold the delegates derive spiritual benelit from their associations together but that in Wanganui there would be as a result added inspiration and impulse for Christian service. He believed that aj great witness in the lives of the delegates would de much toward the extension of the word of God in this city and give a fillip to their own Christian lives. “You also have come to enjoy yourselves; that is only natural,” he said. “I would doubt your honesty if you did not say that you have come to en-l joy yourselves too.” Mr. W. J. Rogers, Mayor of Wanganui, extended a warm welcome to the city on behalf of the council and the citizens of Wanganui. He hoped that they would have a very happy stay in the city and was pleased that •.hey had chosen Wanganui for the 12nd. conference. Without asking the •ouncil or the citizens, he would exend the freedom of the city to the visitors. Words of welcome and inspiration were also spoken by the Rev. R. Dudley, of Trinity Methodist Church, on behalf of the Wanganui Ministers' Association. Such a large assemblage of young people, he said, was very gratifying. The Rev. J. D. Salmond, chairman of the permanent camp committee, returned thanks on behalf of the delegates and outlined the purpose of the conference. At the conclusion of the welcome, the delegates returned to their camps for supper and vespers. The chief items in to-day’s programme will be a devotional meeting at St. Paul’s Church at 9 a.m., a sectional meeting at 11 a.m when the Rev. J. Patterson will speak on “How to Use the Bible,” an excursion to Castlecliff during the afternoon and a meeting in St. Paul's Church at 7.30 p.m. when the Rev. J. Paterson will speak on “Christ and Your Calling.”
