LOWENBERG WINS

PRESIDENT’S HANDICAP BIG RACE AT AWAPUNI PAKANUI AND SIEGMUND t Special Reporter). Continued yesterday under ideal weather conditions, the Manawatu Racing Club's summer meeting was patronised by a crowd which was not quite as large as that registered on Monday. The track was again firm, and finishes were fairly interesting, though there were some easier wins than on the opening day. The totalisator handled £28,9-16 10s, compared with £28,277 10s, an increase of 1669. The total for the two days of the meeting is thus £74,294 10s. Lowenberg, ridden by B. 11. Morris, had a rather easy win in the President’s Handicap, the principal event, the Wanganui-owned gelding beating Gay Hunter and King Key. Pakanui sprang a mild surprise in the Awapuni Handicap, defeating Lucullus Lad, and Siegmund confirmed the good impression he gave on Monday by beating Wildflower in the Himatangi Handicap. Copycat In Close Finish. Lovelilt and Knightsbridge carried most money in the Trial Handicap, but Copycat won in a close finish at nearly double figures. Lovelilt. Knightsbridge, Orient Dawn, Mob Rule and Copycat were early prominent, but at the half-mile Trebor, Lovelilt, Hunting Lore, Copycat, Mob Rule, Knightsbridge, Vintner, Orient Dawn and The Squanderer were racing in that order. At the three furlongs Golden Memory and Orient Dawn came down and Lovelilt Jed Trebor, Mob Rule, Hunting Lore and Copycat into the straight. Copycat challenged and took the lead, but Lovelilt and Trebor stuck to it and the three flashed past the judge, with heads separating them, Copycat winning from the favourite. Vintner, Mob Rule, Knightsbridge, Hunting Lore and Lacan followed. One l or Lady Siegfried.

Red Sun, Busier Brown, Hunting Queen and Lady Siegfried were evenly backed for the Linton Highweight, Which Lady Siegfried won nicely. Lady Wessex and Busier Brown led Night lass, Tidewaiter, Red Sun, Lady Siegfried. Hirangi, Puroto and Hunting Queen out of the straight, and at the six furlongs Lady Wessex was two lengths ahead of Buster Brown :.nd Nightlass. The order underwent l.tlle change along the back and round t .v top. save that Hunting Queen commenced to move up. Turning for home Lady Wessex, Nightlass, Buster Brown, Lady Siegfried, Puroto and Hunting Queen was the order of the leaders, but at the distance Lady Siegfried came through to win by a length from Buster Brown, who was a head in front of Nightlass. Hunting Queen was a good fourth, ahead of Red* Sun, Tidewaiter and Hirangi. Another Blanket Finish. Nereus and Amoroso were the favourites for the highden Handicap, but neither finished in the picture, Alunga winning narrowly from Aureus and Great Hope. When the field had settled down Aureus, Amoroso, Great Hope, Civil, iron and Heir, Dancing Flame, Alunga, Merry Ruler. N'ereus and Rustem were racing in that order. The order was ‘much the same crossing the top, and Aureus and Amoroso were still a couple o£ lengths clear entering the straight, with Great Hope, Son and Heir, Dancing Flame, Alunga and N’ereus nearest of the others. Once straightened up Amoroso retired and Alunga joined issue with Aureus and Great Hope, winning by a nose from Aureus, with Great Hope half a head away. Three lengths back came Alloa, with Son and Heir. N'ereus, Dancing Flame. Rustem, Merry Ruler and Civil next. Easy For Lowenberg. King Rey, backed down to little better than even money, could only finish third in the President's Handicap behind Lowenberg and Gay Hunter. Going out of the straight Gay Hunter, Taillight and King Rey were Jn line ahead of Lowenberg. Gay Hun-

ter, Soho and Boomerang, but running Io the back the favourite was two lengths ahead of Taillight, Lowenberg, Corroborec, Gay Hunter, Boomerang, Sunee, Soho and Pukeko. Thus fihey ran down the back and across the top, where Lowenberg moved up closer to King Rey and was joined by Gay Hunter, Taillight, Corroborec, Soho and Sunee. Once in line for the judge Lowenberg came away and won by two and a-half lengths from Gay Hunter, who beat King Rey by a length. Half a length back was Boomerang, with Corroboree, Pukeko end Sunee in close order. Roaming From Trentham. Lady Montana was best backed in the Christmas Handicap, but Roaming won for Trentham, with Malibu second. After a delay through the tapes failing to go up properly, they were sent, away without a barrier. Accomplice leading Reasonable. Roaming, Malibu, Lady Montana, Golden Chest. Bluffer and Dawning Light along the back. As they turned for home Roaming hit the front and piloted Accomplice, Reasonable, Malibu, Golden Chest and Lady Montana into the straight. Roaming was stopping ’in the run to the judge but held on to win by a length from Malibu, who was a neck in front of Golden Chest. Three lengths back was Accomplice, and Lady Montana, Lickem, Scarf Dance and Good Sun followed. Pakanui, Outsider of Six. The Awapuni Handicap was an »ven betting race, with Lady Ina best backed and Pakanui, the eventual winner, the outsider, but still paying little more than twice as much as the favourite would have done. Bodyline and Lady Ina moved out smartly from Mata Hari, Haughty Winner. Lucullus Lad and Pakanui. The last-named moved up at the halfmile and Bodyline, Lady Ina and

Mata Hari led into the straight from Pakanui. The last-namea put in his claim a furlong from home and came on to win by half a length from Lucullus Lad. Lady Ina was two lengths back, a length and a-half in front of Bodyline. Siegmund Repeats. Siegmund was backed down to a very short price for the Himatangi Handicap and duly repeated his first day's success. Wildflower and Round Score leu Impasto and Siegmund out o£ the straight, but Wildflower established a lead of two lengths into the back stretch, where. Imposture was trying to go up on the outside of Round Score and Impasto. Into the straight Wildflower was a length and a-hall ahead of Siegmund, with Round Score and Impasto next, but once in line lor the judge Siegmund had the measure of the leader, winning by a length from Wildflower. Five lengths back was Round Score, with Impasto a couple of lengths further back and Imposture a poor last. Lacquer Finishes On. Rockingham was favourite for the Kelvin Hack Handicap, but Lacquer finished on well to beat Wananga. Rockingham, Happy Heels, Lustral, Lacquer and Wananga led up the straight, but running into the back stretch Wananga was taken to the front, being two lengths ahead ol Happy Heels, Rockingham and Lacquer. Crossing the top and into the straight Wananga led Rockingham, Lustral and Lacquer (on the rails!, but the last-named came through to beat Wananga by half a length. Galteemore was three-quarters of a length away, third, ahead of Amatory, Rockingham and Lustral. Details of Results:— TRIAL HANDICAP. (01 1120 ; eix furlongs.) 5 Copycat (Mr J. J. MARTON JOCKEY CLUB NEW YEAR MEETING The Marton Jockey Club’s midsummer meeting on Saturday and Monday promises to be one of the most successful in the club’s recent history. The fields throughout are of large dimensions, and with the singlepool system operating on the totalisator there should be some keen wagering. Form from the Manawatu and Waipukurau meetings should be a valuable guide for investors. Old Surrey has been scratched from the Marton Cup field, which at present includes fifteen useful performers. Eight are engaged in the Railway Handicap, and the hack fields are all really good. Golden Chest should have been included in the list of Railway Handicap acceptors. The name Rolling Home in the Maiden Race has been disallowed, the name being Freed. A special train will leave Wanganui for Marton at 9.40 a.m., on Saturday, arriving at 11.28 a.m., in plenty of time for the first race. The return train leaves Marton at 5.45 p.m.
