HOME GUTTED
CHRISTMAS EVE FIRE HURRIED ESC APE MADE ROTORUA, Dee. 27. Late on Christmas Eve the residence of Mr. S. J. Dobbs, a wellknown resident of the Guthrie district, was completely destroyed by lire. Mr. Dobbs was absent from home at the time, but Mrs. Dobbs and their two young children, aged 7i and, 6 years, made a hurried escape. Mrs. Dobbs was awakened about 11.30 p.m. by a noise which she at first thought was caused by her husband returning. When she investigated, however, she found the house full of smoke and flame, and awakening lhe two children hurriedly made her escape. The flames must have spread very rapidly, for a neighbour, who stopped his car outside the house about 20 minutes earlier, saw nothing amiss. Although neighbours hurriendly assembled in an attempt to assist nothing could be done to check the Hames which completely destroyed the house and furniture. An emergency meeting of settlers was held on Christmas morning, when it was decided to form a working bee and construct temporary quarters lor Mr. and Mrs. Dobhs. These were completed the same day with the willing assistance of a large party of sympathetic neighbours.-
