NEW PROCESSES
APPOINTING BISHOP ANGLICAN CANON LAW FIRST TIME IN DOMINION NAPIER, Dec. 23. When Archbishop ‘Averill consecrates the new Bishop of Waiapu at St. John’s Cathedral, Napier, he will have performed four such ceremonies in lhe same church. The first consecration was that of Bishop Sedgwick, who succeeded Archbishop Averill after the present Primate had occupied the Sec of Waiapu from 1910 to 1914. The second was that of Bishop Bennett, Bishop of Aotearoa. and the third was that of Bishop Williams, whose death this month has left the See vacant. The appointment of Bishop Williams’ successor will involve the operation for the first time in New Zealand of new processes under the new canon of the Anglican Church. When the usual procedure of appointment has been carried out by the Pr'jziatc, the name of the clergyman nominated for the position must bo submitted for consideration to a bench of bishops. If the Primale wishes, however, lhe bench of bishops need not be called together, in which case the name will he submitted tn the individual bishops by mail. If the bench of bishops approves by word of mouth or in writing, the archbishop will submit the name to standing committees of the seven dioceses in the Dominion. From these standing committees a majority of consent must be obtained. Approval of the nominee having been obtained from both these sources it will then ho the duty of the Primate to submit the offer Io the nominee himself, and he will have the right to accept or refuse the appointment. The services of the Bishop of Waiapu are being performed at present by Doan Brocklehurst, and the episcopal acts by Bishop Bennett, acting under lhe commission of Archbishop Averill.
