COUNCIL DIFFERENCE

THREE MEMBERS LEAVE MAYORS ACTION RESENTED. TAURANGA, Dec. 23. The deputy-Mayor, Mr. A. N. lies, taking exception to the Mayor, Mr. L. R. Wilkinson, refusing to allow him to speak to a report, rose and left a meeting of the Tauranga Borough Council test evening. Mr. C. T. McFarlane left with Mr. Iles, and they were followed by Mr. T. E. Youngman. The incident arose out of a report submitted verbally by the Mayor concerning the municipal abattoir. He said he bad invited the local butchers to meet him. The butchers had asked for improved ventilation and also that a bleeding rail he provided. The question of killing on Sundays would also require consideration. He would like the abattoir committee Io meet the butchers and go into the matters that had been raised. Mr. Youngman, as chairman of the !abattoir committee, said that when a conference was held with the butchers it would have been courteous to have [asked the committee to be present. [The matters mentioned by the Mayor had been discussed by the council and he could not see why the Mayor should confer with the butchers. The committee had endeavoured to meet all legitimate demands. The abattoirs had been in existence for 14 years and the present campaign had been inaugurated during the last year. He did not. think the Mayor was to be commended for his action, which was tantamount to want of confidence in the chairman and the abattoir committee. Mr. W. McKinnon, a member of the abattoir committee, said he accepted the Mayor’s action as a vote of no confidence in the committee. Mr. Iles was about to speak when the Mayor intervened. If a motion were not proposed, he said, he would close the matter. He then called for the next business. Mr. Iles, after taking exception to the Mayor’s ruling, gathered his papers and left. The meeting continued, as there were still five councillors present.
