AUSTRALIAN BENEFACTORS. ADELAIDE, Dec. 16. At a cost of £52,900 South Australia I will leave all other States behind by !setting up an Institute of Medical and I Veterinary Science. Closely linked with the hospital and [the University, it will replace the I Government laboratory of Bac'erioiI ogy and Pathology. £5OOO Each. ! Miss Edith Bonython and Messrs. Norman Darling and T. E. Bar.- Smith ’have each contributed £5OOO towards .the cost. The University has guaranteed half the stipend of the director and portion of the salary of the de-puty-director. Dr. E. Weston Hurst, a distinguished medical scientist from England, who is to be the institute's first director, is in Adelaide. Sponsors predict that the institute will one day become an important world centre of research into the cure of human and animal disease. Grass and Germs. Modern treatment of pastures designed to increase carrying capacity will be studied. The director has had much experience with stock diseases in Ihe U.S.A. Agriculture, dairying, winemaking and brewing will benefit from the laboratory wor kon bacteria. The new venture will house also the Waite Institute (already famous) and the nutrition department of the Council for Scientific Research.
