BRIDGE COLLAPSES. On Tuesday about 5.45 p.m. a lorry loaded with wool was proceeding to Raetihi and when it had almost negotiated the Manganui-a-te-Ao bridge, about 45 feet of the structure collapsed, and let the lorry down, the pile m the centre being all that saved it from going into the water. The lorry dropped about 30 feet and great difficulty was experienced in hoisting it back on to the road, the wool having to be trans-shipped. The three occupants in the cab escaped injury,. A temporary bridge is being built to enable settlers to erdss the river until : uvh times as a new one is built. SOCIAL. A farewell was arranged in honour of the departure of Mr. and Mrs. Ron Marks to the Mataroa School. Mr. Marks has been head-master of the Umumuri Public School for the past three years and received notice of his transfer to Mataroa at the conclusion lof this term.

He is an accomplished pianist and at all times has taken an active and lively interest in the public life of the district, for which he will be greatly missed by friends and associates alike. At the conclusion of the annual golf meeting, Mr. A. Webb (president), presented Mr. and Mrs. Marks with a handsome travelling rug, complete

with straps and handle, and wished them prosperity and the best of good fortune in their new sphere on behalf of the Waimarino Golf Club. Mr. Marks suitably replied and regretted very much leaving the many friends and convivial atmosphere he had found in the club. A most delectable supper was provided by the ladies, after which a very enjoyable evening took place. The party concluded with the singing of Auld Lang Syne and the heartiest messages of goodwill to the departing couple and their infant son. PERSONAL. Mr. Barker, member of the staff of the Bank of New Zealand, has received notification of his transfer to the Auckland office. Mr. Barker will be replaced by Mr. Lindsay. Mrs. T. D. Baker is spending Christmas and New Year with friends in Hawera. Mrs. T. Fallows has gone to Wellington for the Christmas festivities.
