N.Z. NATIONAL PARTY A meeting of the North Rangitikei and South Waimarino branches of the New Zealand National Party was held at Taihape on Wednesday evening for the purpose of electing delegates to the selection committee that will meet at Marton next month to choose the party’s candidate for the Rangitikei constituency. Mr. W. R. Anderson presided over a large and enthusiastic attendance which included many ladies. Mr. Justin M. Power, of Wellington, provincial secretary, was present and addressed the meeting. He announced that the leader of the National Party, Hon. Adam Hamilton, had promised to visit Taihape at the end of January or early in February. The chairman welcomed the Waimarino electors and added that the North Rangitikei branch would be only too pleased to assist the Waimarino branch in every way possible. Mr. Anderson went on to explain that any candidate seeking election for the Rangitikei seat could be nominated in the usual way. Nominations closed on January 15, and each name would be submitted to the selection committee. The Taihape district was entitled to 14 delegates on the selection committee and he wished to call for nominations.
The following delegates were nominated: Papakai Road and Taoroa, Mrs. A. McColl, Messrs. V. Smith and D. Scott; Ohotu-Utiku, Mr. and Mrs. P. Munro, Messrs. H. Belk, D. G. Gordon; Tiriraukawa, Messrs. K. Hodder and R. Anderson; Rangiwaea: Messrs. John Collier, Mesdames C. Speedy and Bell; Hoeke-Pohonui-Papanui, Messrs. H. Harris, F. Howie. South Waimarino. Mr. A. James presided over a meeting of the South Waimarino electors. A general committee and an executive committee were appointed. The following delegates were selected to represent the Taihape end of the electorate: Mesrs. A. James, R. H. Lowry, H. P. Batley. Mr. W. R. Anderson thanked the members of both the North Rangitikei and South Waimarino branches for turning up in such large numbers and appealed to members to enrol new members. Mr. Anderson pointed out that the greater the membership the more delegates the branch would be entitled to have on the selection committee, and therefore he appealed to supporters of the National Party to get busy and enrol new members. The branch was entitled to one delegate for every 15 members. Mr. Anderson concluded by wishing all present the compliments of the season. Mr Justin Power addressed the meeting and expressed pleasure at the large attendance of ladies. He went on to say that the Hon. Adam Hamilton, leader of the National Party, would be visiting Taihape at the end of January or early in February. The speaker appealed to the Rangitiketi and Waimarino electors to make the next contest a two-party affair. He went on to sav that the Government I_rcp)sed to spend £18,000,000 on public werks during the coming year, and the tax-payer would have to bear the cost. Mr. Power briefly touched upon the state housing scheme and other legislation introduced by the Government. He was accorded a. hearty vote of thanks at the conclu-I sion of his address.
GENERAL NEWS The results of the Christmas hamper competition conducted by the Taihape Municipal Band are advertised in this issue. The prizes were won by T. Siddle (Ist), C. E. Scott (2nd), Pat Cullinane (3rd). At a special meeting of the Taihape Borough Council on Wednesday evening Mr. Olloway, of Eastbourne, Wellington, was appointed town clerk of Taihape in succession to Mr. E. J. Price. There were 21 applications for the position.
