SHARK AND BLACKFiSH

BATTLE IN HARBOUR THRILL FOR SPECTATORS AN UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE AUCKLAND, Dec. 22. A furious battle between a thresher shark and a large blackfish provided an unusual spectacle for a large crowd which gathered at the end of the Devonport Wharf at about three o’clock yesterday afternoon. The two combatants were in fairly deep water outside the vehicular ferry landing and the light raged for over an hour. From time to time the water was stained red with blood and then churned into foam as the shark: maintained a relentless attack on the blackfish, but eventually both fish I disappeared. Fights between thresher sharks and blackfish are by no means uncommon in open expanses of water but they are exceedingly rare in the confines of a busy harbour.
