RANGIWAHIA

SCHOOL concert and prizegiving To a packed house on Wednesday night the pupils of the Rangiwahia School staged a concert, which reflected great credit on the teachers and children. The chairman of the school committee, Mr. W. E. Boshier, expressed regret that Mr. and Mrs. Harre were leaving the district and called upon Mrs. Harre, Miss Leslie Harr and Mrs. McNeely (assistant) to accept handsome bouquets from the children. The bouquets were the artistic work of Miss A. McKenzie and Leslie's posy had been made by the children. The prize-giving was held at the school on Thursday afternoon, when there was a large gathering of parents and friends. Mr. W. E. Boshier, chairman, who presented the prizes, spoke of the excellent work being done at the school and mentioned that since the pupils of Karewarewa and Main South Road had been brought into the school and with the addition of an infant mistress the work at the school had proved most satisfactory from all points of view. An endeavour was being made to provide some swimming facilities for the children and as some

work in this direction would be done in the holidays he asked that any men who could should come along and assist. He then proceeded to distribute the prizes, each child receiving a book. Those receiving special prizes were:—Dux: Frances Hancock. Spelling prize: Desmond Jones 1. Outstanding nature study work: Alma Thompson and Gordon Fankhauser. Standard VI certificates: Frances Hancock and Evelyn Blackler. Attendance certilieates: Alex Crocker, Bruce Blackler. Andrew Hodge, William Crocker, Russell Thompson, Keith Thompson, Terence Bieiski, Desmond Boshier, Marie Blackler, Sylvia Blackler, Evelyn Blackler and Noel Thompson. The chairman made special mention that Frances Hancock, who had sat for a New Plymouth High School scholarship had acquitted herself exceptionally well, missing second place by only eight marks. Opportunity was then taken to bid Mr. and Mrs. Harre farewell and every success at their new school and as a result of a collection by the children the chairman called upon Mr. and Mrs. Harre to accept a handsome crystal water jug with three goblets to match. Valerie Jones, on behalf of the infants, handed Mrs. McNeely a book and wished her the season’s greetings. Mr. Harre replied on behalf of Mrs. Harre and himself and Mrs. McNeely expressed much sorrow at leaving Rangiwahia. Mr. T. M. C. Smith, on behalf of the bulb show committee, called upon Mr. Harre, who as secretary for the last show had worked very hard, to accept a crystal cream jug and sugar basin as a mark of appreciation of his services. After Mr. Harre had returned thanks they were accorded musical honours. Afternoon tea and a lollie scramble brought a very pleasant afternoon to a close. KI AHINE SCHOOL BREAK-UP The Ruahine School held its prizegiving on Friday afternoon, when there was a good attendance of parents and friends present. The chairman, Mr. C. Hall, presented the prizes, and spoke of the excellent work being done al the school. Each child received a book and Aileen Hall, with the best marks, and Owen Evans, for good work in spelling, received special prizes. Afternoon tea concluded a pleasant afternoon. Coombridge, each receiving a book and a handkerchief as a Xmas gift from the superintendent, Mrs. G. Rose. A number of children also received special prizes. Mrs. Rose also gave small gifts to the assistant teachers, Misses Joyce Boshier, Joy Rose and Heather Fankhauser, and also to the mothers of the school pupils.
