SPECIAL MILE RACE PULLAR AND ALLEN GREAT TEST AT DUNEDIN [ Per Press Association. ] DUNEDIN, Dec. 19. At a meeting at Dunedin on Saturday afternoon on the Caledonian Ground the highlight was a special mile handicap, arranged as an Empire Games trial, between W. A. C. Fullar and T. Allen, both provisionally selected in the New Zealand team. Both were together on the back mark. The race was run on a track that was dead after two days’ rain, wm.’? there was a breeze which did not make things any easier for the runners. The back-markers ha.l the race in hand at the bell after being together all the way, and then Fullar made a desperate attempt to clear out over the last lap but Allen went wi-.h him and, running on the cutside, tried hard to pass Pullar. The pair raced stride for stride over the last furlong but Pullar drew away slightly and led into the straight to win by basely two yards, the t'me being 4min. 22 2-ssec. It was a zemarkable performance under such conditions. Alien’s time was 4min. 22 4-ssec. Pullar and Allen both recorded time nine seconds faster than that in the Dominion trial in Wellington. The lap times were: Pullar, 64sec., 68sec., 66sec., and 64 2-ssec.; Allen's being 65sec., 67 4-ssec., 66 3-ssec., and 63 2-ssec.
