Quist defeated Mako 6—o, 6 -4. 6—4. Bromwich defeated Budge 6- -2, 6—3, B—lo, 6—4. Quist had a hollow win, being unextended at any stage. Mako’s game was full of errors from simple returns and wild shots. The outstanding match of the tie resulted in a splendid win for the New South Wales junior Bromwich, who kept great length in his drives and exploited weaknesses in Budge’s forehand. Bromwich was steadiness personified and easily returned the American’s fastest services. Budge found net excursions unavailing. The Australian recovered from o—3 in the third set to ’cad 5—3.
