ELLERSLIE CANDIDATES

WANGANUI REPRESENTATIVES INTERESTING GALLOPS Satisfactory efforts by the thre3 Wanganui candidates for Ellerslie honours were registered on Saturday morning on number one grass track, which was very fast in spite of some heavy showers the previous night. Smoke Screen and Taurangi were galloped before breakfast, and Amigo was sent along after the interval, about two hours later. All three went the reverse way, handling it well. Jumping away at the winning post, Taurangi was responsible for a very fast half-mile, taking a tick over 49 sec., but she was eased up slightly over the last half-furlong and registered Imin. 3 2-ssec. for five furlongs, under a strong pull for the final fifty yards. It is scarcely likely that her rider, a promising Australian lightweight named Reynolds, missed the peg, but his instructions were to let the filly do it easily and she slackened up too soon. Taurangi is in good order for her Great Northern Foal Stakes engagement, and the Beau Pere —Barbacan filly, who will be ridden by B. H. Morris, should be well in the picture in the juveniles’ classic at Ellerslie. Smoke Screen, who with Reynolds up carried a little more than 7.0, went a mile, beside the inside rail all the way, and he was joined by Ilias at the half-mile, the pair finishing together. Smoke Screen cut out the eight furlongs in Imin. 41 2-ssec, and at the finish he was still doing it nicely. He was responsible for a fast quarter in 24sec. and took 49sec. for the halfmile, the six furlongs requiring Imin. 15sec. The Limond gelding will be ridden in the Great Northern Derby by B. H. Morris, who has already been successfully associated with Smoke Screen on several occasions. Taurangi and Smoke Screen leave this morning for Ellerslie, being taken through on the “daylight” Limited. Another Foal Stakes candidate in Amigo was sent five furlongs the reverse way, but the Beau Pere gelding was given time to settle down and eventually jumped off at the two-fur-long peg, finishing at the seven-fur-long peg, on a bend, in Imin. 4 l-ssec. He took 36 3-ssec. for the first three and 51sec. for the half-mile, and as he did not run out in rounding the bend on the last furlong his was a very satisfactory display. His ownertrainer, Mr L. G. Paul, is likely to take him through by float to-morrow, travelling by the inland route, through Raetihi, Taumarunui and Te Kuiti. Amigo is to be ridden by H. N. Wiggins at Ellerslie. Another interesting gallop was that of Golden Pam after the breakfast interval, the Lackham mare registering 49sec. over four furlongs after leaving the first quarter behind in 24sec. Golden Pam has made a good recovery from the knock which necessitated a spell of some weeks, and she should be still further improved before she races at Marton. Collodion slipped over half a mile in good style, doing it easily in 50 l-ssec. Reipar, Icing and Imposture were companions in what was to have been a working gallop, but the trio cut out the distance in Imin. 18 3-ssec., so they were responsible for a good effort. Civil took 37sec. for three furlongs but was not kicked out. Captain Treville, Amatory, Minga, Scarf Dance, Gaily, Middle, Pekoe, Supler. Young Pat, Mahzoltov and Lady Hoariri did useful work.
