CHEERFUL TONE

BRITISH MARKETS Received Dec. 19, 5.5 p.m. LONDON, Dec. 17. The statements made by Mr Neville Chamberlain (Prime Minister) and Sir Thomas Inskip (Minister for the Co-ordination of Defence) have probably contributed to the sudden cheerfulness of tne city markets which finished the week strongly, though there has been no appreciable increase in the volume of business. The new Belgian issue met with a poor response and the underwriters were left with 70 per cent.; but the Huddersfield municipal loan of £l,000,000, in which dealings opened simultaneously with the Belgian loan, was an unqualified success, nearly £5,000,000 having been subscribed. Most industrial shares have improved. Sir Thomas Inskip’s assurance that realrn.unent would not slacken has stimulated iron and steel shares. The feature of the week, however, has been the support given to oil and gold .fnarc:-. The latter have risen sharply. ; Commodities have not shared the ' i hccrfuint’ss on (he Slock Exchange *and h.T.e 1.-crn most irregular. Little j interest been show n in melals, i.:i( wool, however, is notably firmer.
