PERSONAL Mrs. G. R. Grace, of Hunterville, Was a visitor to Wellington this week. Mr. J. L. Coogan, of New Plymouth, has commenced duty at the local post office as an exchange clerk. Mr. Stewart McLean, of Wellington has been spending a few days as •the guest of Mr. and Mrs. B. Illston, Silverhope. _ Mr. and Mrs. B. Kilmister were yisitors to Hikutaia last Saturday for the Stratford-Murdock wedding. • Mrs. K. Duncan has returned to Hunterville after spending a holiday In New Plymouth. She was accompanied by Mrs. J. Ramson and MLss M. Ramson, of New Plymouth, who will be her guests for Christmas. CHRISTMAS HOLIDAYS FOR SHOPS A here has been some confusion fimongst businessmen as to whether yr not the usual half day has to be observed this week. However, definite word has been received from Jhe Labour Department that it is comjiulso/,’ that shops observe the usual naif day, but not necessarily on the {Wednesday following Christmas. ; Local businessmen are at present conferring as to what days will be observed as holidays in Hunterville and notification of this will be made later. CRICKET Hunterville plays Old Bo>s .. L Marlon to-day. The Hunterville team has been selected as follows: IlavIvard, Powell, Ilolford, R. Gordon, Gilbertson, Fisher, Flattery, Bartlett,* taker, Joll, N. Gordon. “LEARN-TO-SWIM” WEEK Following the excellent ground h*'ork being done by Mr. J. R. Joll pnd Misses Rat hie and Stratfor 1 of Che school teaching staff, and Mrs. H. [Wilson and Miss P. Jones, the children attending the swimming lessons at the baths are making wonderful progress and no less than 31 certificates (17 boys and 14 girls) have [been issued after seven days’ teaching, during which each child has received about ten minutes instruction each day. The average attendance of [children has been 90 and thus the {percentage of successes is an exceedingly creditable one and one probably {equalled at very few other schools in the Dominion. f In addition to the 31 children who can now swim across the baths there is quite another 30 per cent, who have learnt the rudiments of the art and are practically ready to qualify their certificates. I The programme arranged by the school teachers was stated to be an excellent one by the professional from Wanganui, and after four days with 53 boys Mr. Joll had six able to cross the baths and thus Mr. Roydhouse has been able to make fast headway •following the good groundwork done before he arrived.
