Marital Status.
Of the 547,228 males aged sixteen and over in New Zealand at the 1936 Census (excluding Maoris) 304,934 had married, 4472 were legally separated, 21,571 were widowed, and 3912 divorced. Those never married totalled 211,576, and 763 did not-specify their status. The female population was 535.664, of whom 301,822 were mar-1 ried, 4939 legally separated,, 49,661
widowed, and 3490 divorced; 175,209 had never married and 523 did not specify. The number of divorced persons showed a marked increase, men being 3912 in 1936 and 2073 in the 1926 Census, and women 3490 and 1635. The highest number of divorced women, 754, were between the ages of 50 and 59. In the same age group 11014 men had been divorced, the highest- number- £oe males,.
