POLICE SPORTS
. COMPETITIONS IN SYDNEY TEAM FROM NEW ZEALAND The New South Wales police sports will be held in Sydney on March 5 next in conjunction with the New South Wales Centenary. In 1935, Constables Thompson and Simpson attended with success from Christchurch. In 1936 Constable Hotham, from Auckland, was successful in the wrestling. In 1937 Constables Beecroft and Cossill went from Auckland. For the 1938 carnival in Sydney the Auckland Police Sports Club is endeavouring, with the assistance of the Commissioner of Police for New Zealand, to send 10 men from the New Zealand police from different centres to take part. This will be the first organised attempt on behalf of the police of New Zealand to compete with the police of Australia. Since the present commissioner took office he has allowed the men to enter for sport of all kinds, this having been more or less barred by previous commissioners. The team will sail by the Awatea on February 23 from Auckland and will be in Australia for one week before the carnival. This is held for one day and two nights and this year attracted over 75,000 people to the Sydney Show Grounds.
