TAIHAPE

TRAMPING OTAIHAPE ALPINE CuUB ASCENT OF MT. RUAPEHU During last week-end two parties made tne ascent of Ruapehu. The first left Taihape on Fnuay evening and reached Ohakune Hut at 1.3 u a.m. Next morning, under excellent j climbing conditions the parly ascended the leading ridge until snow was encountered. Here the layer was thin and partly iced. To avoid the labour of cutting steps they then struck on across and up Gliding Gladys to the summit. The sun, which had been partly obscured by mist, now burst rorth and the party was badly snow-bu|ned. The Oilly was boiled on the summit at about 12.30 and after taking photographs of the crater and various peaks all glissaded the full length of Gliding Gladys from summit io loot. On the Sunday it was intended to climb Paretetaitonga, via Maungaluruturu Glacier and thence to Vvakapapa Glacier to join the other parly. All, however, awoke showing oad signs of snow-burn received the previous day and the trip was abandoned. Weather conditions were excellent during the whole week-end. The views from the summit were obscured by driving clouds of mist, but some excellent photographs were obtained. As the party descended the track from the hut they walked into heavy rain from the 5-mile peg to Ohakune. Since, however, all carried diy clothing, this was of little consequence. Taihape was reached at 11. u p.m. on Sunday. TAIHAPE THEATRES AMALGAMATION OF INTERESTS The directors of the Fuller-Hay-ward Theatre Corporation, Ltd., proprietors of the Majestic Theatre, and Mr J. H. Meekings, proprietor o£ the Regent Theatre, nave entered into an agreement whereby the two theatres will be controlled by an organisation known as “Taihape Cinemas." Under the new arrangement, Mr Meekings will take over the management of both theatres, and Mr Culpitt, who has been manager of the Majestic for the last three years, is to be transferred to another appointment about the middle of January. The new organisation will actually commence on January 1 next, and the picture-going public of Taihape can rest assured that their tastes will be amply catered for. The output of all the major studios has been arranged for, including Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Fox Films Corporation, Gaumont British, R.K.O. Radio Pictures, Warner Bros-First National, United Artists, Columbia, Paramount, Universal, and British Empire Films.

It will be seen therefore that Taihape will, for its size, be catered for better than any other town in New Zealand. PERSONAL The funeral of the late Mr Daniel Bailey was held on Wednesday afternoon, when an exceptionally large number of mourners followed tne hearse to the Taihape Cemetery, where the last sad rites were performed by Rev. E. T. King. The pall-bearers were Messrs F. Balli J. Griffen, S. Bolt, A. R. Webster, A. E. Rowley, P. Austin. Many beautiful wreaths were received from local sports bodies and various branches of the railway service, as well as from relatives and friends, and testified to the very high esteem in which deceased was held.
