ON WANGANUI TRACKS

HOLIDAY CANDIDATES YESTERDAY’S GALLOPS Several interesting gallops were done on the course proper yesterday ’ey horses engaged at the holiday meetings. The track was in good erler, but after recent showers it was not as fast as usual. Icing (F. Latham), Scarf Dance (W. Rayner), and Collodion (S. Edwards) were companions over half a mile, taking a tick over 50sec. There was little between them at the finish, and they took a shade under 26sec. for the last two furlongs. Reipar (S. Edwards) and Artful Dodger (G. Dowrick) were associated in a spin over live furlongs, Reipar having a decided advantage at the finish, the distance being covered in lmln. ssec. Sam’s Choice was not bustled to cover a circuit at a solid half-pace, which was increased slightly over the concluding two furlongs. Airing, who has been showing signs of muscle soreness, was sent once round, stretching out over the last three furlongs. Civil was trotted on the inside track and Flamingo’s pacework was of the merely useful order. After the breakfast interval, Master Norval and Pekoe did useful pace work. A couple of rounds at from half to three-quarter pacework was the task allotted Gaily. Amigo was not after time in a light task over four furlongs, and Middle was given three-quarter pace work, morning, Marks decided to work had intended bringing Smoke Screen, Taurangi and Porotiti’s brother in yesterday morning, but as they had gone at strong three-quarter pace when they were in on Wednesday morningfi Marks decided to work them at home yesterday. Smoke Screen worked well but appeared a trifle lazy. He has been troubled with a dry cough, which nearly caused Marks to decide against doing the Auckland trip, but the Llmond gelding has made a satisfactory recovery. He will be pitted against Royal Chief and Courtcraft in what promises to be a great classic test in the Great Northern Derby. Taurangi was eager to travel faster, and the Beau Pere filly appeared to be in excellent order for her Great Northern Foal Stakes mission. Ruatiti, full-brother to Porotiti, is a big chestnut who has not yet been galloped as he is growing very fast. It is not likely that he will race till late in the autumn.
