AN AWARD HOLIDAY
ARBITRATION COURT DECISION [ Per Press A sedation. I AUCKLAND, Dec. 1. In the judgment delivered by Mr Jusike J. d'Regan, the Arbitration Courr. upholds the decision of the Wellington magistrate, Mr Luxford, who ruled that employees who had been paid wages in full for a working week were entitled to an extra day s pay for an award holiday which fell on a day when the factor} would normally have been closed. The Labour Department had proceeded against Cathie and Sons, Ltd., for failing to pay an employee for ; Boxing Day of last year, a Saturday, at the same rate as on an ordinary working day. It was claimed that ithe company had committed a breach of the Northern (females only) Clothing Trades Award. The magistrate ordered the company to pay the costs. The firm appealed against the decision. The magistrate’s ruling was that he had befen paid in full for the week ending Boxing Day. A further 40 hours’ work had not been completed during the week in question and the employer could lawfully have required work on the Saturday ■ morning had it not been Boxing Day.
