FAST SWIMMING
YOUNG GIRL’S*PERFORMANCE [ Per Press Association. ] DUNEDIN, Nov. 24. An outstanding performance was registered at the Kiwi Amateur Swimming Club’s carnival to-night by Miss J. MacDonald (Southland) in the 110 ladies’ short-limit backstroke handicap. Miss MacDonald, who is only 15 years of age, covered the distance from scratch in Imin. 25 l-ssec., being timed by three watches. To ensure selection in the Empire Games tet|oi, the New Zealand Council set a standard for this event of 85sec. Miss MacDonald’s time was, therefore, only l-ssec. over this time and was 3-ssec. outside the New Zealand record for 100 metres held by Miss Ena Stockley. Miss MacDonald’s performance was all the more meritorious when it is considered that the water she swam in is recognised as the slowest in New Zealand.
