FRONTIER COMEDY
POLICEMEN “ARRESTED” Twenty-four London Policemen, well used to arresting other people, were themselves taken into custody when they went to Germany to play Association football against Cologne police. They went with a collective passport, but omitted to get the special visa necessary because Mussolini was visiting that country. At Kaldenkirschen, on the DutchGerman border, they were taken into custody and escorted to Cologne by plain-clothes and uniformed police, after showing a letter from the German embassy in London. Police officials who were waiting at Cologne to greet them could not help smiling at the humour of the situation. The matter of the passport was soon put right, and two matches were played. The German police won both —the first by I—o, the second by 6—4.
