HINTS AND SUGGESTIONS
If it is not possible to take up a carpet for a good beating, the following operation is well worth trying:— Mix together four parts of ammonia water and three parts of alcohol, diluted with water. Go over the surface of the carpet with a short handbrush dipped (and shaken) in this solution. When the dirt loossened in this manner has been removed, rub over the surface with soft cloths dipped and wrung out hi the following cleaning liquid: Ten parts of castile soap dissolved in 20 parts of soda, and half part each of ammonia and alcohol. Carpets thus treated regain much of their original colour, and need not be taken up. No refrigerator! And you would like to have a frozen custard with the pineapple! What are you going to do about it? Buy Jib. of nitrate of ammonia at any chemist’s, and dissolve it in a pint of water. The temperature will drop to almost 20 degrees below zero, and if yqu place a basin of the preparation to be frozen in this water it will produce the desired result. To remove slight scratches from plate glass, clean the surface by gently rubbing with a pad of cottonwool. Then cover the pad with velvet, rubbed. with line rouge, and rub the surface for live minutes.
