SIGNIFICANT MEETING
Herr Hitler And Lord Halifax WATCHED ATTENTIVELY BY ROME (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) Received Nov. 17, 9.35 p.m. LONDON, Nov. 17. The Berlin correspondent of the Times says that although it is felt that a more friendly atmosphere now prevails for the meeting of Lord Halifax and Herr Hitler, German official quarters continue to emphasise its unofficial nature. Authoritative statements from both sides, it is pointed out, have established the real significance of the meeting and also its limitations. Mr. Chamberlain has stressed British friendship with France and America and Germany has stated with equal clarity that the Berlin-Rome axis and anti-Communist triangle will remain unshakeable, yet between these boundaries, so runs German argument, there is plenty of room for negotiation because the existing friendships, which are not exclusive, are neither disturbed nor endangered by the preparations from fresh relationships. The Daily Telegraph’s Rome correspondent says that Lord Halifax’s Berlin visit is being watched attentively, coupld with disappointment that no arrangements yet have been made for opening the British-Italian conversations. Signor Mussolini is most unlikely to make any political pronouncement until the result of Lord Halifax’s visit is known. Meanwhile Signor Virginio Gayda, the Duce’s principal newspaper commentator, announces in the Giornale d’ltalia Italy’s determination never to return to the League owing to the imposition of sanctions. “Between Rome and Geneva the break is spiritually and politically irreparable,” he says. Lord Halifax had a final long talk with Mr. Eden before his departure for Germany. ANTI-FASCIST TRIALS seventeen sentenced ROME, Nov. 16. Seventeen anti-Fascists were sentenced to terms ranging from one to ten years. Four were acquitted. The other 21 are being tried to-day.
