WANGANUI WOMEN’S CLUB

SUCCESSFUL ROSE SHOW There was a fine display of blooms at the annual rose show held yesterday by the Wanganui Women’s Club. Organised by the gardening cricle of the club, the members combined to make the function a success. The afternoon was one of the most enjoyable yet held and the display surpassed previous years. The clubroom was filled with flowers, the exhibits being particularly beautiful and the vestibule was decorated with tall vases of Iceland popies. With the cream walls as a background the beautiful cut flowers and the bowls and vases in the decorative section looked their best. Not only the roses, of which there was a wonderful display, but the excellent collections of flowers and decorative section called forth many expressions of admiration. There were tall irises in varying shades, lupins, delphiniums, stock in delicate pastel tints, peonies, Australian heath, sweet peas in pink and mauve shades, and sweet William in a lovely shade of rose pink and many other flowers in the attractive exnibits. The winning bowl of flowers in the decorative section was a dainty arrangement of catmint, London pride, lovc-in-the-mist with pink and cream roses, irises, ranunculus and other flowers. The second award featured blue and gold irises, Iceland poppies and bottle flower. Another had a colour scheme of different pinks and creams and a fourth was in autumn tonings. Gold, lavender-blues and pinks made up the colour scheme of the tall vase of flowers awarded first place, the lovely stock and irises being cleverly arranged with tiny feathery flowers. The vase placed second was in gold and orange toned flowers. Mignonette, banksia roses, wallflowers, tiny gold and green blossoms were used with distinctive effect for the prize posy which had a surround of leaves exactly matching the colour scheme. A dainty arrangement of blue, gold and deep cream flowers with green leaves composed the second prize winner.

Mrs. H. V. Hammond, the club president, welcomed the members and visitors who after viewing the exhibits enjoyed a dainty afternoon tea. The judges were Mrs. Aubrey Cave and Mr. C. H. E.
