WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

KAITOKE MEETING The usual monthly meeting was hold on November 4, Mrs Owles presiding. The report of the federation meeting held at Westmere was read by the delegate, Mrs Owles, who was accorded a good hearing and a vote of thanks. The combined concert and dance, which was arranged for funds for a Zipp heater for the hall was a great success, both socially and financially and the committee wish to thank all who helped so willingly, especially Mr Batterson, who so kindly played the music for the dance. As next meeting is the Christmas meeting it was decided to have a social afternoon and an exchange of gifts. Will members and friends please note that if they wish to enter into this happy exchange will they please bring along a gift. The value is to be not less than Is. Come along and have a lucky Christmas dip. Mrs Brine’s demonstration, making bags from felt hats, was very thorough and keenly watch and it is hoped to see a good collection of bags before long. An unusual demonstration was given in floral work by Mrs Shanks, this being a decorated mantelpiece, which looked very nice indeed when finished. As Mrs Higgins is leaving the district. she was presented with the winning bouquet and last week, at a card evening, was presented with an electric iron on behalf of the institute and social committee, she being a popular member of both. The competitions resulted as follow*. Points.—Ginger cake, Mrs Hogg 1; baby’s bootees, Mrs Ruffe 1; floral trophy, bouquet, Mrs Burston 1, Mrs Owles 2, Mrs Mosen 3; garden circle, best two blooms, Mrs White 1, Mrs Hogg 2, Mrs Scott 3. The competitions for next meeting will be:—Points, Christmas cake (not iced) or Christmas present costing not more than 2s 6d; garden circle, three roses; floral trophy, decorated mantelpiece. The hostesses will be Mesriames Brine, Moosman, Hogg and Tremaine. A happy meeting closed with the National Anthem.
