TEMPERANCE WORKERS
W.C.T.I . CENTRAL BRANCH The monthly meeting of the Wanganui central branch was held in Trinity Church Parlour as usual on the second Thursday in the montn. Mrs Duxfield, president, in the chair. Mrs Blake led devotions, prayers being offered for Mrs Heatly, absent through a serious operation. Reports of work on several branches were handed in, with the names or two new subscribers to the* White Ribbon, the official organ of the union, and of four new honorary members. Suitable amounts were voted for the annual subscription to the organising fund, and for sample literature from both the Temperance Alliance and W.C.T.U. headquarters, to decide on distribution during the coming year. The consideration of the balancesheet and the flection of officers were postponed until an additional meeting in December, as it is not considered necessary to hold the customary midsummer recess. Mrs Beggs, vice-president, spoke on the effect there had been in Palestine during the brief period of the British mandate, by the increase of the sale of alcoholic drinks. This has risen from 25 to 1000, and admittedly has had a distinct influence in in* creasing the difficulties of settlements between different races in such a small country. Public opinion should be educated in this, as in other matters, by careful watching of rapidlymoving national events, which in their issues affect no one separate part of the world. Mrs Walker. Aramoho, district agent for the White Ribbon, spoke on methods of carrying on with that side of the work, and of the necessity ot training children to see the personal advantages, especially* in health, of total abstinence. The principle speaker for the afternoon was Miss Appleby, Dominion organiser for the Y branch. After her speech there was general discussion as to methods of organising and carrying on with Y groups. It was agreed to hold, on Wednesday week, in the Baptist schoolroom, in Ingestre Street, an inter-denomi-national meeting to meet Miss Appleby and to discuss her report on the possibility of a local Y branch, as that part of the work is progressing so favourably elsewhere. Afternoon tea was provided and the bring-and-buy table well patronised. The good al tendance was commented on and a cordial invitation given to all sympathisers to attend further meetings.
