It is then that a former reporter, now a lawyer, returns to his old profession to solve the murders and apprehend the criminal, also to save the life of the publisher’s daughter with whom he is in love, in. method of his operations and the artventures he encounters go to provide one of the most intriguing screen stories of its kind that has been filmed. building society The annual meeting of the Taihape Co-operative Building Society was held on Wednesday evening, when Mr. A. James presided over a fair attendance in the unavoidable absence of the chairman of the society (Mr. F. W. Somerville). Annual Report The annual report read as follows: Your boards of directors has pleasure in presenting the thirteenth annual report. The profit for the year is £l2l 16s 6d and has appreciated from that shown last year by the fact that for this year we had two £5OO appropriations tendered for. Our profits are mutual, but they depend upon tenders being received for moneys available. The directors have had to give careful attention to many matters brought before them during the year and I thank my fellow directors Rr the consideration given to the affairs of the society and the considerati n shown to me during the past year. The profits at the credit of the profit and loss account amount to £4 4s per share and this combined with the very cheap rate of interest (premium) paid, and the fact that most members have had loan free of interest surely proves that the society is s°rving a useful and profit maki ig service. We had ten appropriations during the year, two by sale and eight by ballot. The number of shareholders remaining on the register is 104 holding a total of 555 shares. The number of ma :bles still to be balloted foils 42. Messrs. Somerville and Kincaid retire this year from the directorate, and are eligible for re-election. Members do not appear to realise the absolute cheapness of money tendered for. The very light interest incurred and the spread instalment sys-1 ,em of repaying both interest and principal represents so great an ad- ( vantage that it is believed this should oe more availed of amongst the members. With total appropriations to date of £33,050 this society has contributed favourably to the savings and benefit of our citizens. Mr. A. M. Ryan, the retiring auditor, again offers his services to the society. The report was adopted. Messrs. F. W. Somerville and T. C. Kincaid were re-elected to the directorate. The retiring auditor, Mr. A. M. Ryan, was reappointed. Two “free of interest” ballot for £5OO each were drawn by Mr. H. Marsh and Mrs. F. Miller.
