LAWN TENNIS AND CROQUET CLUB Perfect weather conditions prevailed on Saturday when the 1937-38 season of the Waverley Lawn Tennis land Croquet Club was opened. A' | Yankee tournament was arranged ana las the courts were in good condition I a most enjoyable afternoon was spent. The president, Dr. Graves, spoke, wishing the club a successful season 'and introduced Mr Leckie, who had been appointed club secretary. He | also welcomed visitors from Patea. • saying that he was pleased to see I that as in former years, they were interested in their neighbouring club. Dr. Graves then presented trophies tc 'Miss N. Lupton and Mr Williams (Patea), the winners of the tournament. CROQUET The croquet members held a most successful bring-and-buy stall during the afternoon, the proceeds of which are to be spent in the erection oi shelters on the croquet lawns. The winners of the competitions are as follows:—Stockings, Mrs D. G. Thomson; cake, Mrs J. Davidson. W.D.F.U. A committee meeting of the Waverley branch of the W.D.F.U. was held on Friday, sth., in the Town Board rooms, Mrs Newland presiding. Members present were: Mesdames G. H. Alexander. W. F. Alexander, Macfarlane, Graham, J. Johnston. P. V. Graves, Strauchon and Miss Elmslie. Apologies for non-attendance were received from the following members: Mesdames Wilson, Dickie, Robertson, Brewer, Tallott, Walker, Hunt, Brown, Wallace and Miss Lupton. The treasurer, Mrs Macfarlane, reported on the birthday party and stated that 24 new members had been enrolled. The question of delegates for the provincial council meeting to be held in Wanganui on November 24 was discussed and Mesdames Macfarlane and Brown were appointed as voting
members. A deputation from the baths committee waited on the meeting, asking the branch to organise some function to raise money to augment the baths fund and it was decided that they would do so in February. A deputation from the A. and P. Association also waited on the meeting, requesting assistance in the revising of the home industry schedule. It was decided that the schedule be revised at the conclusion of the meeting. PERSONAL Mr and Mrs Sheppard visited New Plymouth for the week-end to attend the High School sports and concert.
