WILL EMBARRASS BRITONS
DUKE’S VISIT TO U.S.A. : AN OUTSPOKEN JOURNALIST (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) Received Nov. 4, 6.30 p.m. NEW YORK, Nov. 3. Declaring that they will embarrass every Briton they meet, Mr Hannon Swaffer, the British journalist, before sailing for England denounced the decision of the Duke and Duchess of Windsor to visit the United States. He said: “I accompanied the Duke when he studied housing in Wales, and if he were hall a century in the United States he would know no more than he does now. He is just a middle-aged man, married to a mid-dle-aged, publicity crazed woman. Her former home in Baltimore is the best show throughout America. 1 stood in the lucky bath. In my opinion the Duke ought to put her back in it.” Swaffer was referring to the bath allegedly used by the Duchess, in which a majority of visitors stand or sit “for luck.” The Baltimore Federation of Labour, affiliated with the American Federation of Labour, passed a resolution condemning the Duke of Windsor’s visit, especially to Baltimore. The federation warned trade unionists of "a potential threat to free Labour and free, democratic Government, of slumming parties professing to study labour.” Speakers denounced the Duke of Windsor for his German visit as seeking labour information from Herr Hitler. They also asserted that the Duchess, while a native of Baltimore, had not showed the slightest sympathy with the problems of labour or the poor. An attack was also made against the couple’s association with Mr Bedaux, who was charged with the authorship of a vicious labour system designed to stretch out the working hours. Mr Swaffer has been a member of the staff of the Daily Mail, Daily Mirror, Daily Graphic, Daily Sketch, and ediior of the Weekly (now Sunday) Despatch; Dramatic critic of the Daily Express and Sunday Express, i Latterly he has been on the staff of the Daily Herald, 8.8. C. ATTITUDE NOT RELAYING BROADCAST. LONDON, Nov. 3. The 8.8. C. does not propose to relay the Duke of Windsor’s American broadcast on December 12, which will be his first since his abdication speech.
