TAIHAPE
BROKEN GATE Not every motorist who accidentally breaks a gate on a county road forwards a pound note to the County Council to cover the cost of repairs and yet this is what happened one day this week, when the Rangitikei County Council received a letter from a Wellington motorist, who enclosed £1 to cover the cost of repairs to a gate damaged by his car on the Tai-hape-Napier road. The motorist could easily have refrained from reporting the matter and nobody would have been any the wiser, but he evidently believes in the old adage that “honesty is the best policy.” His letter to the County Council reads as under: “On Labour Day, through poor visibility and slippery roads, I accidentally broke down a gate on the route from Taihape to Napier. I replaced the gate as best I could and removed the broken glass. The driver of a service car to whom I reported the accident suggested that I should write to the County Council and expressed the opinion that the gate could be replaced for 10s. I am enclosing £l, which I think should cover the cost of repairs and the trouble caused.” GENERAL NEWS In the music examinations conducted in Taihape on October 20 by Dr. Markham Lee, examiner for the Royal School of Music, London, the following Convent pupils were successeful:—Grade VI (intermediate): I.
