DUKE OF WINDSOR
MANY WILD RUMOURS WHY HE VISITED GERMANY LONDON NEWSPAPER COMMENT (Dy Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, Oct. 26. The News-Chronicle draws attention to widespread rumours resulting from the German tour of the Duke and Duchess of Windsor. For instance, it says, the tour was planned by certain members of the Government in order to discredit the Duke (according to one rumour) and also that the Nazis arranged it in order to bind him to those in Britain who want an alliance with Germany. Another rumour is that the Duke of Windsor accepted the magnificent hospitality of the German Government because he desired his wife to be treated with proper respect. The truth is probably that the Duke is tired of meaningless existence and has decided on these tours in an artless belief that the visit to democratic America after Nazi Germany would free him from the suspicion of political partiality, adds the journal. The Government should, without delay, end the undesirable rumours by coming to an agreement that henceforth the Duke’s activities be subject to friendly approval, concludes the article. INVITATION TO CANADA TORONTO, Oct. 26. , The Duke of Windsor has been invited by a well-known publishing house to open a national book week here and participate in other public functions. It is believed he will accept. RUSSIAN HOPE TOUR BY DUKE OF WINDSOR LONDON, Oct. 22. The Soviet hopes that the Duke of Windsor will see Russian workers’ conditions, the Warsaw correspondent of the Daily Mirror states. Stalin, the correspondent says, has instructed the Soviet Ambassadors in Berlin and Paris to make a special endeavour to persuade the Duke to make the visit. “Without seeing our workers’ conditions, the Duke will not know what is possible in solving Europe’s industrial and social problems,” declared M. Shvenlk, general secretary of the Soviet building unions. It would be unlikely that the Duke would agree to attend the revolution celebrations on November 7, but it is hoped that he will tour Russia after his tour ot the United States.
