LEAGUE OF MOTHERS

The October meeting of the League of Mothers held on Tuesday afternon took the form of a flower afternoon. There was a fair attendance of members, who were welcomed by the president, Mrs. N. Driver. An apology was sent by Mrs. C. S. Ryan, secretary, who is on the sick list. Her place was taken by Mrs. Carter. Mrs. Beaumont Bates moved and it was seconded by Mrs. E. H. Poynter that a letter from the league be sent to Mrs. Ryan. Mention was made of the bereavement suffered by Mrs. Poynter and all stood in silence as a mark of respect. Owing to her husband’s transfer to Wellington, Mrs. Ellis resigned from the committee. Mrs. Driver read a report of the recent conference held in Wellington, and gave a short talk on the status of woman in olden days, also read a poem on “Flowers.” “The Though for the Day” was sent in by Mrs. Ryan. Items given during the afternoon included recitations by Mrs. F. Reid and songs by Mrs. O. Warnock.

The small tables with their gold cloths were centred with vases of Iceland poppies and other decorations were snowballs and poppies. Mrs. G. Fear gave a demonstration on arranging flowers and decorative work and gave hints on colour schemes. For a gift box of flowers she explained that it was always advisable to add some sweet smellinoblooms, as the fragrance gave considerable pleasure. A valuable hint given was that flowers should be in water for a while before being used for decorative work. Roses, choice pansies, ranunculi and other flowers were nicely blended in a pretty box arranged during the demonstration. Several paintings of flower studies

had been brought along and these were used to illustrate the talk on arrangement. Many helpful suggestions were given by the demonstrator, who was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. The meeting opened and closed in the usual way.
