‘Augustus’ 3000th Anniversary Banned
ROME. —Fascist Italy is celebrating this year the two-thuusandth anniversary of the birth of Augustus, lirst emperor of Rome. A committee composed of noted Italian archaeologists, historians savants was appointed some years ago to prepare an elaborate programme, which will begin utliciaily ia September with the opcuing uf an Augustan Exposition. This celebration has been divided iu’.u material, artistic, literary, historical and political sections, and the programmes are intended to impress on the Italian people the fact that Rome, after 2UOO years, is once more the capital of an empire. The material division includes the restoration of buildings and monuments identified with the reign of Augustus. On this work architects, archaeologists and town planners have been busy for the past three years. The artistic section is concerned with the statues, handcrafts and decorative work of the period. The literary celebration is intended to promote propaganda in favour of a revival uf the Latin language. On the historical side the Italian people aie to be made aware of their national inheritance. The political division will be an attempt to liken the influence of Fascist Italy on Europe to the Pax Romana of Augustus. Puss! Puss! A special preacher, about to ascend the pulpit in a country church, was asked if he would like any particular hymn to be sung in keeping with his sermon. 4 ‘No, no,” he replied. ‘‘As a matter of fact, 1 seldom know what I’m going to say until I arrive in the pulpuit.” ‘‘Oh, well, in that case,” said the vicar, "we had better have on the hymns ‘for those at sea.’ ”
