WESTMERE MEETING The October meeting of the Westmere Women’s Institute was held on Tuesday, the president, Mrs Brownlie, being in the chair. Business relating to the forthcoming federation council meeting, which is being held at Westmere on Friday, October 22, was discussed, and the catering arrangements were finalised. A most interesting demonstration on the care of babies was given by some of the staff and students from the Karitane Home. The international golden thread was continued, Irish folk songs being given by Mrs Bellringer and a Highland dance by Yvonne Anderson. The competition for child's knitted singlet resulted in Mrs Bassett being placed first and second and Mrs Greenwood third. Another competition, for tied bunch of garden flowers, drew forth a record number of entries, and was won by Mrs Corrigan, Mrs Brownlie being placed second. The hostesses were Mesdames Finnic, Phillips, Robinson, Z. L. Smith and Misses M. Missen and E. Smith. MEETING AT MAXEWELL The October meeting of the Maxwell Women's Institute was fairly well attended. Several visitors were present, including Miss Young, federation president. One new member was enrolled. The chief feature of the afternoon was a splendid talk on native trees by Mr Downes, which was much enjoyed by all, indeed for tree-lovers it was all too short. An invitation from Turakina to attend the W.I. birthday party was received. The points competition for the day was a sponge sandwich. Mrs Handley judged this, awarding the prizes as follows: Miss Morrison 1, Miss L. Morrison 2, Mrs J. Darbyshire 3. Junior competition (collection of biscuits) : Nola Staite 1, Miriam Luty 2. Flower competitions were judged by Mrs Brine, resulting:—Bowl of anemones. Mrs Billinghurst 1, Miss Handley 2, Mrs Morrison 3; vase red flowers. Mrs N. Hughes 1, Miss Morrison 2, Miss L. Morrison 3. Members were urged to attend the annual council meeting to be held at Westmere on 22nd. inst. Ten shillings has been sent to the secretary to help to buy Christmas -gifts for the lepers on Makogai Island. The hostesses for November will be Mesdames Handley, Hood, N. Hughes, Misses Handley and Staite. On this occasion the federation committee will be paying their official visit. FORDELL At the September meeting of the Fordell Women's Institute, a small flower show made the hall very attractive with spring blooms. After the Ode to Friendship had been sung. Mrs Lee welcomed the members and visitors.
Remits for the half-yearly council meeting were discussed and two delegates appointed (Miss A. Henderson and Miss J. Christie). An interesting display of floral work, floral ladies on wire frames and on saucers, was brought by Mrs Shanks, who gave instructions for making these nove'ties. The competition, “A Hat From a i Kitchen Utensil,” created a good deal of amusement, and was won by Mis, , J. Lloyd wearing an enamel funnel I with appropriate trimming. I A competition arranged by Mrs Lee was won by Mrs Dale. During the afternoon, goods from the disabled soldiers’ shop were on sale and gifts were brought by members for the Makogai leper station. Votes of thanks were proposed to Mesdames Shanks and Gillies for ortnonrtrating and judging the flower competitions, and to Miss Hail for her generosity in donating trophies for the decorative section of the flower show. The meeting closed with the National Anthem. Competition results were as follow: Points competition (a) knitted bonnet', Miss N. Christie 1, Mrs Treewick 2, Miss Henderson 3; (b) narcissi. Mrs Aiken 1, Miss Tilley 2, Miss V. Higgle 3; three anemones, Miss Tilley 1, Mrs Duncan 2, Mrs Lloyd 3; three polyanthus. Miss Tilley 1. Mrs Bruce 2 and 3; Iceland poppies, Mrs Duncan 5, .Mrs Bruce 2, Mrs Kingston 3; flowering shrubs, Mrs Bruce 1, Miss Tilley 2, Mrs H. Campbell 3; any other variety, Mrs Christie 1, Miss Tilley 2, Mrs Lloyd 3; bowl oi bulbs, Miss V. Higgie 1, Miss N. Christie 2. Mrs Lloyd 3. The hostesses for the October meeting are Mesdames Christie, Rowan, Stewart, Misses Barnes and J. Christie. Members are reminded of the exhibition of work done this winter and of the competitions for a hospital box and a rug from waste materials. more colourful fruits or left by itself, and heaped back into its original place. Garnished with fresh mint sprigs, this is at once a dish picturesque in appearance, delightful to the eye as well as to the palate, easy to manage in eating.
