BANK DEPOSITS
AN AUSTRALIAN RECORD Savings Bank deposits in Australia at the end of August were the heaviest ever recorded, exceeding deposits at the end of July by £889.0U0. and at the end of August of the previous year by £7,180,000. Statistics released last ucek by cne Commonwealth Statistician 'Dr. Roland Wilson) show aggregate deposits in Australia at August 31 at £z32,C29,000 compaiCd with £231,14J(;(«.• on July 31, and £224,849,000 al August 31 last year.
Before the depressioi. deposits reached their highest level of £225,963,000 on September 3, 1929. Since May, 1932, the volume of deposits has generally maintained a steady increase. In June this year the previous recorded peak was exceeded by £4,888,000, and further of £289,000 and £889,000 were recorded during July and August respectively. Deposits at the end of August, with movements on August last year in parentheses, wore as follows.- - New South Wales, £32,229.000 (plus £2,439,000); Victoria, £76,116,000 (plus £2,471,000); Queensland, £27,621.060 (plus £542,000); South Australia, £26,445,000 (plus £968,000); Western Australia, £11,838,000 (plus £246,000); Tasmania, £7,412,000 (plus £483,000); Federal Capital Territory. £279,600 (plus £320,000); Northern Terrilei’y, £53,000 (minus £1000).
