NEW RAIL-CAR SERVICE
WANGANUI AND TARANAKI START EARLY NEXT YEAR. “The Railway Department hopes to operate rail-cars o.i the New Ply-mouth-Wellington route :n a regular service by next March,” said Mr. G. IL Mackley, general manager of railways,, in an interview at Stratford on Tuesday. The department was still being held up through delay in getting necessary equipment for the cars from abroad, added Mr. Mackley. Most of the material, he explained, was on hand, but a certain amount having a direct bearing on the date of the completion of the cars had not yet been received. If no further unforeseen delays occurred the department hoped to be able to begin running-in the cars by the end of this year or early in the New Year and in that case it was considered likely that the service could be begun by March. The standard rail-car will be of allsteel construction and will weigh approximately 31 tons. It will be fitted with dual engines and will be driven from either end. The chassis will be of the double bogey type. The car will have an overall length of 67 feet, making it 17 feet longer than the ordinary type of passenger car in use on the Main Trunk Line. Interior
| furnishings also have received care* ful attention and Mr. Mackley re« marked that the new rail-cars wouW provide the last word in land trans* port comfort.
