WOMEN’S GOLF
WELLINGTON TOURNEY PROVINCIAL TITLE AUSTRALIANS COMPETING [ Per Press Association. ] WELLINGTON, Oct. 12. The Wellington women's provincial gol£ championship opened at Heretaunga to-day in fine weather. The course is in perfect order. The large entry was augmented by members of the visiting Australian team, all of whom qualified for the play-off in the championship. The best six scores in the Wellington provincial championship were: — Miss V. Fleming (Christchurch) 81— 75—156, Miss B. Cheney (Australia) 77—84—161; Mrs. S. Morpeth (Australia), 81—82—163; Miss E. Hutton (Australia), 78—85—163, Miss H. Buchanan (Christchurch) 82—81— 163 and Miss B. Kernot (Australia) 85 —79 —164. Miss S. Tolhurst 166, and Miss Wray 170, both of Australia, also qualified. Miss Fleming and Miss Kernot went round in the morning, the former playing steadily to go out in 42 and back in 39. She maintained, her steadiness in the afternoon with Miss Hutton and returned cards of 37 and 38. Miss Cheney went out in 41 in the morning and did a good home journey of 36. She was not so steady in the afternoon, however, when she took seven more strokes to cover the course.
Mrs. Morpeth and Misses Hutton and Buchanan played consistently. The former seemed to pick up the pace of the greens better than Miss Hutton. The latter, however, played inspired golf in the morning, reaching the turn in 34, three under bogey, but had a stormy passage home, which cost her 44. Miss Buchanan handled her clubs stylishly all day. She covered the course in 82 in the morning and a stroke better in the afternoon. Miss Wray did a steady 85 in the morning and the same in the afternoon. Miss Kernot could not gauge the strength of the greens in the morning taking, 40 for the outward journey and returning in 45. She improved in the afternoon and went round in 79. “There's no excuse for playing such bad golf on such perfect links,” she said. “It's simply that I can’t play to-day.” The trophy for the best gross score in the qualifying rounds went to Miss Fleming.
The teams match was won by Christchurch (Misses Fleming and Buchanan, Mrs. McKillop and Miss E. White Parsons) with an aggregate of 333. Wellington B were next with 345.
