WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

TURAKINA MEETING The usual monthly meeting will be held on October 21, roll call to be “What I Would Like on the Programme,” and the competitions for the day will be a small jar of lemon honey and best bloom in your garden. Hostesses for the meeting will be Mesdames W. Kronast, J. Jones, Misses M. Cameron, and M. Low. The birthday party of the institute has been postponed from October 21 to Tuesday, October 26, owing to the half-yearly council meeting at Westmere on October 22.

Some of the features of the afternoon’s entertainment at the birthday party will be two short plays, community singing, and a stall in aid of the R.S.A. ARAMOHO CENTRE The monthly meeting of the Aramoho centre of the New Zealand Women’s Institute was held in the Druids’ Hall on Friday afternoon, the president, Mrs McNeil, being in the chair. The president thanked members for their kind expressions of sympathy with her during her recent illness. For the half-yearly federation conference to be held at Westmere this month, Mesdames Goldthorpe and Gifford-Moore were chosen as delegates from the centre. Mrs Goldthorpe has also been appointed to take charge of the arrangements for the Blind Institute basketware appeal in November. The members decided to have a Christmas tree for the children at a date to be fixed. The arts and crafts members are to meet at Mrs Shanks' I and the gardening circle is to meet ai Mrs Barkman’s.

There was a good display ot spraxias and ixias, the judge (Mr.Edwards) awarding the prizes to Mrs Murchie, 1; Mrs Moreland, 2. Tulips, Mrs White, 1; Mrs Abercrombie, 2. The cushion competition resulted: Mrs White, 1; Mrs McNeill, 2. The lunch competition was won by Mrs White, with Mrs Moreland second. Displays of three double roses and best saucer of pansies will constitute next month’s competition. Miss Alice Rogers delighted members with two monologues, Miss Dunlop accompanying her. Mrs Voilemere sang two songs artistically, Mrs Hamlin being the accompanist. The Kaitoke Institute ladies presented the comedy “Throw No Stones,” the producer being Mrs Garner. The frocking was very pretty. The comedy was greatly enjoyed, those taking part being Mesdames Higgins, Mosen, Cameron, and Hay, and Miss Andeison. The Orpheus Choir contributed two items. The various performers were heartily thanked for their offerings. After the business portion of the meeting, Mrs Whitlock acted as president, and Mrs Bevege as secretary. A dainty afternoon tea was served, and the gathering closed with the singing of the National Anthem.
