Meteorological Office, Wellington, Tuesday, Oct. 12, 3 p.m. General Situation.—A shallow depression is passing away eastwards and an anti-cyclone with its centre near Tasmania now extends across the South Tasman on to the South Island. A shallow depression is located over the north-west portion of the Tasman Sea. Forecast.—Winds: Southerly to south-easterly, light to moderate generally at first but freshening and becoming strong in some exposed positions, more especially in eastern districts and about Cook Strait. Seas (New Zealand waters): Rather rough in parts of the Cook and Faveaux Straits areas, elsewhere slight to moderate but rising somewhat south of East Cape. Eastern Tasman Sea: Moderate to fresh winds between east and south-east prevailing with moderate to rather rough seas. Weather: Fine on the west coast of the South Island, elsewhere changeable with scattered and mainly light rains, more especially in districts with an easterly aspect and the northern portion of the North Island. Temperatures cold. The New Zealand Friends’ School, St. John’s Hill, report for 24 hours ending 6 p.m. yesterday: Bright sunshine, 6 hours 20 minutes. Rainfall, nil. Temperatures: Maximum, 64deg. Fahr.; minimum, 44 deg. Fahr. Time of sunset to-day, 6.10 p.m. Time of sunrise to-morrow, 5.03 a.m. Phases of the Moon for October.—New Moon, October 4; First Quarter, October 13; Full Moon, October 20; Third Quarter, October 27.
