SPRING RACING CAMPAIGN
AUCKIAND CUP ENTRIES The Masterton spring meeting will be held to-morrow ajid Saturday. As Masterton is just under 120 miles from- Wanganui it would not be surprising if several parties of keen form followers made the trip. The handicaps for the first day of the Wellington Racing Club’s spring meeting have made their appearance and will be perused with interest. The Trentham meeting will be a three-day affair, commencing on Thursday of next week and being continued on the Saturday, with the concluding day to be held on Labour Day holiday.
Twelve months ago the Trentham spring meeting, also over three days, found* the totalisator turnover reaching £133,562 10s, half of which was handled on Labour Day. It is safe to prophesy that these figures will be substantially improved on at the forthcoming meeting. The weights for the Waverley Racing Club’s Labour Day fixture draw attention to the meeting, which is popular with racegoers in the Wanganui and Taranaki districts. Acceptances are due to close next Monday night.

Doric takes the box vacated by Grateful, who has been returned to his owner after enjoying a beneficial spell at The Grange. The Taranaki and Stratford midsummer meetings will show an increase of £5OO each in the stake-money offered, and a like figure will be the increase in the stakes at the Franklin Racing Club's meeeting. The Franklin Cup will be worth £5OO and the club will also have a hack cup of £3OO.

When The Bigot won the Little Flaxmere Handicap at Hastings on Saturday the Australian-bred horse was making his first effort under silk since winning the Adderstone Hack Handicap at the Awapuni autumn meeting. In the interim he has enjoyed a let-up at The Grange agistment farm at Westmere, with similar happy results to those which attended Chief Ranger’s reappearance in the active brigade at the Wanganui meeting.
The Bigot was responsible for an impressive effort in winning the Little Flaxmere Hack Handicap at Hastings. Though he drew No. 17, a smart beginning had him always prominent and he fought off a strong challenge by the outsider Granvale at the end.
