HUNTERVILLE

PLUNKET SOCIETY The monthly meeting of the Hunterville Plunket Society was held last Saturday. Those present were Mesdames J. Bull, J. Brown, Abel, Hogg, G. Simpson, Wm. Wilson, F. Butement, D. D. Simpson, J. L. Lambert, L. J. Thompson, Dr. J. Burnett and Miss M. A. Hourigan. Mrs Bull presided and the members expressed their pleasure at having her back again in the chair. Apologies were received from Mes- ! dames Pitcaithly and J. D. Lilburn. ! Nurses report for September: New ; cases 1, visits paid to Hunterville by nurse 4, visits to houses 14, visitors to rooms, adults 36, babies 30, children 111, total 77; telephone calls, 9. Health j of mothers and children, good. I The scales in use at present being I far from satisfactory, it was left with Dr. Burnett to inquire the price oi scales that would weigh babies accurately to the quarter ounce, ana children up to five years, and to leave this matter over until next meeting. Miss Hourigan, as r member of the committee, reported that she has arranged an afternoon at “Whareroa” early in December, to which all the babies in the district up to two years old. with their mothers, are invited. I Assistance is to be given by the Junior W.D.F.U. and part of the proceeds is to be sent to the leper settlement at Mogai to help provide Christmas cheer for the inmates. The i Plunket Society, as its interest is mothers and babies, was asked and agreed to assist generally. List of those who have paid the sum of 5s or over this year: Mesdames J. Green, Dr. J. Burnett, Miss Hourigan. Messrs Gregory and Klue. GOLF The week-end weather was appreciated by golfers, there being a good muster on the links. The A grade medal round was won by H. J. Swainson and the B grade on a count back by P. Sutton from T. J. Taylor. The best scores were: Swainson, 82—15 67; Sutton, 97—30—67; Taylor, 93 26—67; P. Smith, 94—26—68; B. 111ston, 82—13—69; Donovan, 79—9 70; J. Hartley, 81—10—71; J. Taiuru, 88—16—72. HUNTERVILLE BOWLING CLUB ANNUAL MEETING The annual general meeting of the Hunterville Bowling Club took place last week at the pavilion, Mr L. J. Thompson presiding. There was a fair attendance of members and several new members were elected. The annual report and balancesheet were read and adopted. The election of officers for the ensuing year resulted as follow: —Patron, Mr Grant Simpson; president, Mr J. A. T. Brown; vice-presidents, Messrs E. H. Taylor and Rev. A. W. Smaill; secretary and treasurer, Mr E. L. Ironmonger. The committee is to comprise of office-holders and the members ot the match and green committees. Match committee, Messrs L. J. Thompson, J. Wilson, E. W. Donovan and A. J. Petrie; green committee, Messrs W. H. Boswell, E. H. Taylor and F. J. Petherick; hon. auditor, Mr C. D Barford; centre delegate, Mr J. Brass.

The subscriptions were decided upon as follows: New members !n their first year, £1 ss; all other members, £2 10s. It was decided to purchase a new mower. Owing to the weather up to date being unsatisfactory to prepare the green the date for the opening day is to be decided upon later. Thanks was accorded the retiring president, Mr L. J. Thompson, for his excellent service to the club. TOWN BOARD MEETING The monthly meeting of the Hunterville Town Board was held on Monday night, Mr R. A. Gordon presiding. Also present were Crs. L. J. Thompson, T. J. Taylor, J. Klue and R. F. Baker. Mrs M. V. Smith wrote applying for half rates on an unoccupied dwelling.—Granted. Hon. J. G. Cobbe wrote enclosing information on the Government hous- 1 ing scheme. The clerk was instructed to write thanking Mr Cobbe for his interest. The Transport Department’s circular letter regarding the issue of posters for display was read and it was decided to apply for some of the posters. Mr H. McManaway, representative on the Power Board, in a letter, gave information on the special lighting being considered by the board. — The letter was received. The local body officers’ agreement was handed to the board's solicitor for him to peruse. In connection with repairs to the pound the County Council advised that they would stand half the cost up to £5O, which the engineer estimated would be the outlay.—Held over until members visited the pound. Full information regarding the Government housing scheme was received from the Parliamentary Under-Secretary, but discussion was held over until next meeting. A letter quoting prices of theatre seats was received, the members considering that second-hand seats might be available. An application from the Fire Brigade for eighteen chairs for the station was granted. Foreman’s Report The foreman reported on the month’s work as follow: Road Maintenance. —Roads receiving attention during the month were Ongo, Kotukutuku, Rangatira and Main Street. Water Supply—Both reservoirs are holding their full capacity. A connection has been laid to Mr R. Hodson’s property in Paraekaretu Street. One connection out of repair has been attended to. Sewerage.—One blocked connection to the sewer in Milne Street hau been attended to. General.—The concrete drain has been cleaned out. The cutting of grass on the Rest Room and Traingle

sections has been attended to as required. The surfacing of the footpath in the vicinity of the Town Hall is well under way. I estimate the cost of materials based on present prices, for surfacing in concrete 4in. x 2in. the footpath from G. B. Gregory’s premises to the Presbyterian Church at £lO and from Paraekaretu Street to the English Church at £4O. It was decided to hold over decision regarding a reduction for the hire of the hall for the jubilee celebrations until a balance-sheet was seen. Cr. Taylor reported that drovers were asking for c crub to be cut on Wilson Road. It was decided that this be attended to and also the work, suggested by the clerk, of grading the road where it met the main highway.

Authority was given the Fire Brigade to prevent seats being moved during performances at the local theatre.
