PERSONAL Mr and Mrs C. F. Dalgety, Kawhatau, have returned from a visit tu Palmerston North. Mr and Mrs lan Smith, Taumarunui, are visiting Mr L. G. Smith. Mrs F. Rowley and her son Russell have returned from a holiday spent in Auckland. Mr and Mrs G. Salt have returned after spending a few days in Wanganui. Mr L. G. P. Mahoney, town clerk, is on a visit to Wellington to attend the engineers’ conference. Mrs W. Comber, Wellington. ts visiting her brother, Mr P. Furber. WOMEN’S INSTITUTE The October meeting of the Man* gaweka Women’s Institute was presided over by Mrs M. Ginnane, who welcomed three new members. Owing to the death of Mrs A. Furber, the oldest member of the institute, all members stood in silence for two minutes. Arrangements were made for supplies, etc., in connection with the forthcoming half-yearly councL meeting, and the delegates were appointed for same. Mrs M. Guthrie read the two minutes reports that were entered for the competition, Mrs F. Billinghurst's report proving the most popular. Much interest was taken in the

demonstration on sweet making given by Mrs Gordon, Hunterville, and the reading of the play, “Five O’Clock,” i by the members of the Drama Circle, v\as most enjoyable. The competition results were:—> Brown scones, Mrs R. Dickson 1, Miss Zohs 2; collection of bulbs, Mrs T. Pairman 1, Miss Zohs 2; home-made rug, Mrs M. Sutherland 1, Mrs M. Ginnane 2. GOLF The closing of the Mangaweka Golf Club will be held during the weekend, all matches having been cone pleted with the exception of the fina 1 of the Brinsden Cup and this will b» finalised at the week-end. In the semi-final, J. O’Callaghan won from A. Moss after a very evenly contested game at the 19th. green. The final will be played between J. O’Callaghan and D. Barrell. Visitors for the closing day are invited from Utiku and Rangiwahia Golf Clubs. The final of the men’s championship was won by J. O’Callaghan from H. Waymouth.
