CHESS MATCH

WELLINGTON CITY PROVINCE

An event of considerable importance in the chess world took place at Palmerston North recently when a match between teams representing .Veilington City and Wellington Province was played in the P.D.C. tearooms. Twenty-six boards were engaged and, witn the exception o£ one ooard, two games were played at each. One provincial player was unable to lake part in the second round. Owing to a shortage o£ players from the city, live provincial players were loaned to their opponents. Very keen contests resulted and the first round finished with Province in lhe lead by two games. An adjournment was made lor tea between 5.30 and 7 p.m. Alter the meal City tried hard to retrieve lhe position but the score for the second round was 15 to 10 against them. This made the totals City 22, Province 29. The second annual City v. Province match was therefore won by Province, which gives one win to each side. Alter the match each city player was the guest o£ his (or her) opponent at supper. All who took part in the event spent a very enjoyable time and are already looking forward to the next annual contest which, it is confidently expected, will be on a larger scale.
