The Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club's spring meeting was held to-day in bitterly cold weather before a good attendance. A great finish was provided for the Duke of Gloucester Cup, four horses finishing within a length. The totalisator put through £9743 10s, against £7033 10s last year, an increase of £2710. RANGITIKEI RACING CLUB THE SPRING MEETING NOMINATIONS TO-MORROW Owners and trainers should not overlook the fact that nominations for the Rangitikei Racing Club's spring meeting are due to close at 9 o'clock to-morrow night. The meeting, which is to be held on Saturday, October 30, follows on after the Waverley Racing Club's Labour Day fixture, and it is sure to be well patronised. The stakes have been generously increased, and the principal event, the J. R. McKelvie Memorial Handicap, has a stake of £2OO. The Clifton Handicap, the open sprint, has stake-money to the extent of £l5O allotted, and in no instance is the stake less than £lOO. The secretary, Mr. E. V. At half-way Royal Bachelor still held a lead of three lengths but Smoke Screen moved up by the home turn, in company with Royal Chief and Airam. Once in line Smoke Screen assumed the lead, just staving off a determined challenge from Royal Chief by a head in an exciting finish. Airam was fourth. SHORTS HANDICAP. (Of £4OO ; six furlongs).
