OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP. first round’ results. Received Sept. 9, 10.5 p m , SYDNEY, Sept. 9. Five players share the lead at the end of the first round of the Australian open golf championship, which is being staged on the Australian Club lings at Kensington. But for an unfortunate occurrence Nettlefold, the Tasmanian champiom would have led the field outright. He played the wrong ball to the ’ first green and was penalised two strokes. He had a stroke round of 71. The leaders at the end of the first round are:—McKay, Rae. Crook, Rufus Stewart and F. Bolger, 72; Nettlefold, G. Naismith, Vonnida, Bourke 73; Boorer, Booth. Bradshaw, W. Campbell, Petterson. Walker, H. Williams, Wishart, Harvey, 74. Others include Ferrier, C. Gray, E. Cremin, 75; W. Holder, 76; Whitton, Keane, Richardson, 77; Hattersley, W. Bolger, Ward (New Zealand) 79; Godby (New Zealand) 97. Ward played excellent tee shots, but early was astray with his approaches, making several visits to the bunkers. Later he missed half a dozen short putts but, generally, pleyed very sound golf. Godby started with eight at the par four hole and thereafter played completely without confidence, being frequently in the rough. He also took three putts ona number of greens. Ferrier disappointed, being erratic with his irons.
