BOYS’ & GIRLS’ AGRICULTURAL CLUBS

WANGANUI-MAIN TRUNK DIVISION ROOT CROP • COMPETITION RESULTS The mixed plot competitions commenced two years ago were continued during the season. This year competitors were provided witn seeds of carrots—shorthorn and intermediate —parsnips, swedes, silver beet and leeks. Manure for the plots, which were 50 square yards in area, was also distributed. In addition to the above six compulsory rows, competitors were required to grow three rows of plants of their own choice. That the selection made by competitors was a wide one is shown by the following list which details the plants grown in the “own choice” rows throughout the district: Field carrots, rape, kale, chou mouellier, curly kale, cabbage, cauliflower, swee| corn, kumeras, brussels sprouts, onions, shallots, potatoes, turnips, spinach, tomatoesj peas, beans, salsiiy, celeriac, yams, red beet, red cabbage.

Considerable interest was aroused by the introduction of unusual crops in the various districts and it is felt that the educational benefits that accrue from the wide selection are considerable. As in previous years, crops were awarded marks for cultivation (max. 40), quality (max. 20), extra rows (max. 10), and record (max. 30). A study of the marks given will show that the standard of work was high. The one general weakness noted was in the treatment of the leek crops. Too many competitors planted on the flat and were unable to make provision for the blanching of the edible portion. To secure best results leeks should be planted in a trench which can be filled in as the plants develop. This was pointed out where necessary.

The entries received totalled 225 from 33 schools and 170 plots were presented for the judges’ inspection. In 1936, 24 schools brought forward 131 plots to the final judging. The advance made during the year is, in a great measure, due to the activities of the group committees in the various centres. At Taihape, Raetihi and Waverley-Patea the work has been put on a sound basis by the local organisations and it is felt that increased interest will continue to be shown as a result of the efforts of those forming the committees. Petersen Cup (most meritorious performance for the year).—The Orautoha school is nominated for the award. This school of about 30 pupils produced 11 plots of a high standard throughout, the marks ranging from 87 to 56, most of the plots securing over 70.

The efforts of the following schools are highly commended: Alton, Harleyville, Ngutuwera, Ohingaiti, Raetihi, Upokongaro, Wangaehu, Whenuakura. The Farmers’ Union Challenge Shield—awarded to the school securing highest average marks for cultivation and record—was won by the Kiwitea School in the ManawatuOroua division. In conclusion, we desire to express our appreciation of the assistance rendered the movement by teachers, supervisors, group committees and other organisations that have worked in the various districts to bring about such satisfactory results. E. H. LANGE, R. A. ROBBIE, Judges. The central executive will provide certificates to Ist, 2nd, and 3rd in every school. These will be forwarded shortly. Other awards in the various

schools are in the hands of the group committees.
